The Impact of a Black Male Educator on School Climate:
A Case Study in Belonging and Representation

This presentation explores the impact of a Black male educator on school climate in a middle school setting, with a focus on homeroom instruction at Ed and Verma Pastor Elementary School. Grounded in culturally responsive pedagogy and intentional community-building, this capstone study examines how representation, relationships, and resilience influence student engagement, behavior, and staff collaboration. Drawing from student and staff surveys, focus groups, and interviews, the research highlights shifts in motivation, interpersonal connections, and school culture. Lived classroom experiences inform the study, offering real-time insight into how culturally relevant practices and identity-affirming interactions take shape in daily instruction. Anchored in key literature (Wallace et al., Hall, Bryan & Williams), this work explores the broader implications of Black male educator presence in shaping inclusive, equity-driven learning environments. The session provides both practical strategies and research-based insights for school leaders, educators, and stakeholders working to improve school climate through representation and culturally responsive practice.
